  • This training course was produced as part of the OPTIMA – "Good Practices in Mollusc Aquaculture" project, an initiative co-funded by the European Union dedicated exclusively to promoting best practices in bivalve mollusc aquaculture. This sector represents a vital component of the European Blue Economy, contributing 30% of the EU's total aquaculture turnover in 2021, with a production value of approximately €1.27 billion and over 40,000 direct employees.

The primary objective of this training program is to increase the technical and professional skills of workers in a sector where 90% of companies are micro-enterprises with fewer than 10 employees. In many participating countries, such as Italy, there is a shortage of qualified personnel with specific skills in plant management, safety in the use of onboard machinery, and marine conservation. For this reason, the course will analyze in detail the differences between the five partner countries (Italy, Spain, France, Ireland, and Greece), exploring the different farmed species and their characteristic techniques, such as long-line systems, Spanish bateas, French bouchots, and bottom farming.

In addition to the technical aspects, the training will focus on sustainability and the ecosystem services that bivalve mollusks naturally provide. These species act as "environmental engineers," mitigating eutrophication through biofiltration, creating biodiversity hotspots, and contributing to the sequestration of carbon dioxide (CO2) in their calcareous shells. Understanding these benefits is crucial to improving social acceptance of the sector and promoting the product on the market through quality certifications such as the BIO, DOP, or ASC labels.

The OPTIMA project aims to equip industry professionals and entrepreneurs with the tools needed to address contemporary challenges, promoting the sustainability of shellfish farming through the adoption of product and process certifications (such as organic, ASC, or DOP).

A central pillar of the course is understanding and leveraging the ecosystem services provided by bivalves, including from an economic perspective.

The course also addresses the mitigation of environmental impacts, such as plastic waste management, and provides solutions for managing the problem of predation on local species and alien species (e.g., blue crab).

Finally, the training program addresses climate change issues, with the aim of combating die-offs caused by global warming.

The goal is to train a new generation of workers with a modern entrepreneurial mindset, capable of harmonizing production traditions with technological innovation and the protection of the marine ecosystem.

    • The final video of the OPTIMA project brings together the experiences and videos produced in the five partner countries (Italy, France, Spain, Greece, and Ireland). The result is a fundamental training video for those entering the sector as new entrepreneurs, as well as for existing bivalve farmers who wish to deepen their knowledge of farming techniques, the species farmed, cultivation areas, the impacts of climate change and alien species, the ecosystem services provided by bivalves, and, finally, the challenges facing the sector and the solutions adopted in other European countries.
